Legos.<\/strong>\u00a0Are they on their way?<\/p>\n<p><strong>2. Long story short, someone from the local TWC billing office did call me on Friday and I got my rate adjusted back to the original rate (saving me $120\/year). This would have happened anyway, but by Tweeting to them publicly I&#8217;d like to think I saved myself about an hour of being on hold. How about you guys? Any stories since Thursday?<\/p>\n<p><strong>3. Discuss the readings.\u00a0<\/strong>In\u00a0\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.slate.com\/articles\/business\/moneybox\/2013\/08\/cover_letter_writing_advice_how_to_write_a_cover_letter_for_an_entry_level.html\" target=\"_blank\">I\u2019ve Read 500 Cover Letters for Entry-Level Media Jobs<\/a> (from\u00a0<em>Slate,<\/em> Aug 2013), Katherine Goldstein says this: &#8220;Many young people seem to have no idea how to apply for a job. What I see time after time from young [professionals]\u00a0are not the classic no-nos, like misspellings and typos, but what appears to be <em>a fundamental lack of understanding of how to sell oneself to a prospective employer&#8221;\u00a0<\/em>(emphasis mine).<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>What are some of the ways Goldstein tries to address this in her article?<\/li>\n<li>Of her tips, which seem the most compelling or surprising based on your experiences writing cover letters?<\/li>\n<li>How do they line up with the other readings? \u00a0That is, what do you hear repeated over and over again?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>4. Analyze job ads.\u00a0<\/strong>In\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.courses.jasonluther.net\/professional\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/CCS_coverletters-1.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">Cover Letter FAQs<\/a>,\u00a0Career Services\u00a0suggests that the purpose of the cover letter is to &#8220;to demonstrate a terrific fit between what the \u00a0organization needs and what you can offer.&#8221; In order to do this, you&#8217;ll first need to understand exactly what those needs are.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Let&#8217;s look at the examples from the handout,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.courses.jasonluther.net\/professional\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/CCS_coverletters-1.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">Tailoring Your Cover Letter<\/a>.\u00a0Read the job ad quickly to see if you can spot the skills and qualifications necessary for this position &#8212; then read it again, looking even more closely and critically. Now read the excerpts. Which is\u00a0strongest? Weakest? Why?<\/li>\n<li>Often the qualities or skills in an job ad seem vague. In those cases it is up to you to <em>show <\/em>them what they are telling you. That is, if they tell you that\u00a0they&#8217;re looking for a &#8220;good communicator&#8221; you <em>show<\/em> them how ways how your treasury position at your sorority required you to brief\u00a0the house\u00a0on finances every other Sunday. Let&#8217;s use <a href=\"https:\/\/www.courses.jasonluther.net\/professional\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/brainstorm_qualities-1.rtf\" target=\"_blank\">this brainstorming handout<\/a> to help us practice this.<\/li>\n<li>Take the job ad you brought in today and try this same exercise. First list the skills, requirements, qualifications like the one in the brainstorming handout. Next,\u00a0\u00a0list \u00a0specific experiences and skills from your own background that you could use in a cover letter for this position. After 10 min or so, we&#8217;ll share these.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>5. Analyze some sample letters. <\/strong>Although letters will vary somewhat, both the &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.courses.jasonluther.net\/professional\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/CCS_coverletters-1.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">Writing a Cover Letter<\/a>&#8221; handout and the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.career.vt.edu\/JobSearchGuide\/CoverLetterSamples.html\" target=\"_blank\">Virginia Tech Career Center page<\/a>\u00a0offer similar advice in terms of structure &amp; content.
