Letters are due tonight.<\/strong> Any last minute questions about\u00a0these? A few reminders:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"ul1\">\n<li class=\"li1\">Please send me your letters and ad in\u00a0<b>one email.<\/b>\u00a0This is so that (a) I don\u2019t lose your stuff, and (b) I don\u2019t get twice as many emails\u00a0as necessary.<\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\">Send me your <b>2 letters<\/b> as doc or docx files \u2014 I don\u2019t want pdfs and I don\u2019t want Google Docs. This is so I can comment on these quickly and consistently.<\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\">Also attach your\u00a0<b>job ad<\/b> as a legible doc, pdf, or\u00a0png file. I won\u2019t comment on these but I do want to know the context for your letter.<\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\">Name the files with your last name first and the assignment (i.e.\u00a0Barrow_jobad.pdf).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Also, are you <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/document\/d\/1O0rhBVcZSwMoM63yU7OMJogDcMEJSL2Jfv02QA30b9M\/edit?usp=sharing\" target=\"_blank\">signed up for a conference<\/a>?<\/p>\n<p><strong>2.\u00a0The Instructions Project<\/strong>. We&#8217;ll quickly review the requirements for this assignment and look at some examples from previous students. These examples are <em>not<\/em> meant to be models to emulate, but should give you a rough idea of what&#8217;s possible (or at least what might be considered in the ballpark) for this unit.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Example 1 &#8212; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.instructables.com\/id\/SS-Save-Wheezy\/\" target=\"_blank\">SS Save Wheezy<\/a> (Instructables)<\/li>\n<li>Example 2 &#8212; <a href=\"http:\/\/sranthes.wix.com\/extremelegos\" target=\"_blank\">Extreme Legos<\/a> (Wix)<\/li>\n<li>Example 3 &#8212; <a href=\"http:\/\/nasamissionx2011.wikispaces.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">NASA Mission X<\/a> (Wikispaces)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>3.Time to build<\/strong>. I&#8217;ll give you about 40-45 minutes of class time to meet with your group and come up with some ideas for your prototype. You certainly don&#8217;t have to decide on a design\u00a0today, but this is a chance for you to entertain and evaluate some ideas. While branding isn&#8217;t really part of this project, you should consider the idea of your\u00a0design enough that it makes sense conceptually to your audience (or imaginary customers).<\/p>\n<p><strong>4. Looking closer at instructions as webtexts<\/strong>. In the last part of class today, I&#8217;d like each group to look at a different DIY instructions site.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Team 1<\/strong>:\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/allrecipes.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">All Recipes<\/a><\/li>\n<li><strong>The Awesome Team (Name)<\/strong>:<a href=\"http:\/\/www.wikihow.com\/\" target=\"_blank\"> wikiHow<\/a><\/li>\n<li><strong>Minions<\/strong>:\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.instructables.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Instructables<\/a><\/li>\n<li><strong>Francisco &amp; The Girls<\/strong>:<a href=\"http:\/\/www.diynetwork.com\/\" target=\"_blank\"> DIY Network<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>You can handle this task as you see fit. If almost everyone has a laptop, though, you may look at different pages and compare designs. Or you might all choose one to discuss. No matter what you decide,\u00a0\u00a0be prepared to discuss\u00a0the following questions after 10-15 minutes:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">How are the instructions\u00a0organized? What does the parts list look like? How are the pages designed? How do users navigate from one page\/frame\/screen\/layer to another?<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Describe and evaluate the <b>visual elements<\/b> &#8212; formatting, images, videos, etc. &#8212; in terms of font, arrangement, size, perspective, clarity, etc.<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Describe and evaluate the <b>text <\/b>&#8212; the actual words &#8212; in terms of language used for action (verbs, verbs, verbs), sequence (order of steps), manner (how something is done), and purpose (why something is done).<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>For Tuesday, I&#8217;d like you to try to make or do something from one of these sites \u00a0(or somewhere\u00a0similar). It shouldn&#8217;t be too\u00a0complicated and it certainly\u00a0shouldn&#8217;t cost you anything. You could <a href=\"http:\/\/allrecipes.com\/Recipe\/Cranberry-Sauce\/Detail.aspx?event8=1&amp;prop24=SR_Thumb&amp;e11=sauce&amp;e8=Quick%20Search&amp;event10=1&amp;soid=sr_results_p1i1\" target=\"_blank\">make a sauce<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wikihow.com\/Unstick-a-Door\" target=\"_blank\">fix a\u00a0door that sticks<\/a>, or<a href=\"http:\/\/liquor.com\/recipes\/smashing-pumpkin\/\" target=\"_blank\">\u00a0mix a cocktail<\/a> (21 and up, of course). As you do, notice what works well with the instructions and what doesn&#8217;t. How could these instructions be improved? What would happen if they were rewritten in a different medium? If there&#8217;s a comment section, how\u00a0do folks add to the experience?
