{"id":384,"date":"2014-10-06T21:57:37","date_gmt":"2014-10-07T01:57:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/courses.jasonluther.net\/professional\/?p=384"},"modified":"2014-10-06T21:57:37","modified_gmt":"2014-10-07T01:57:37","slug":"t-107-working-with-a-team","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.courses.jasonluther.net\/professional\/2014\/10\/06\/t-107-working-with-a-team\/","title":{"rendered":"T, 10\/7: Webtexts &#038; project planning"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;d like to start today by quickly reviewing what&#8217;s coming up, especially <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/document\/d\/1O0rhBVcZSwMoM63yU7OMJogDcMEJSL2Jfv02QA30b9M\/edit\" target=\"_blank\">conferences<\/a> on Thursday and Tech Briefings next week.<\/p>\n<p>For the latter, I want to review four things:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>You\u00a0should have your\u00a0deliverable\u00a0ready at the start of\u00a0your\u00a0lesson<\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\">You\u00a0have <em>up to<\/em> 15 min for your\u00a0briefing; I time it. You will receive a notification from me at the 5 and 10 min. marks.<\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\">At the end of your briefing, the class\u00a0has a few minutes to evaluate you in Google Forms, but may also choose to\u00a0write notes throughout the briefing and complete the online form later.<\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\">Evals go to me\u00a0for advisement; I judge some of your participation grade with this\u00a0in mind.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>After that, we have three tasks:<\/p>\n<p><strong>1. Looking closer at instructions as webtexts: Part I<\/strong>. In the last part of class on Thursday, each group looked at a different DIY instructions site.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Team 1<\/strong>:\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/allrecipes.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">All Recipes<\/a><\/li>\n<li><strong>The Awesome Team (Name)<\/strong>:<a href=\"http:\/\/www.wikihow.com\/\" target=\"_blank\"> wikiHow<\/a><\/li>\n<li><strong>Minions<\/strong>:\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.instructables.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Instructables<\/a><\/li>\n<li><strong>Francisco &amp; The Girls<\/strong>:<a href=\"http:\/\/www.diynetwork.com\/\" target=\"_blank\"> DIY Network<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Take a few minutes to regroup and chat about your answers to these questions:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">How are the instructions\u00a0organized? What does the parts list look like? How are the pages designed? How do users navigate from one page\/frame\/screen\/layer to another?<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Describe and evaluate the <b>visual elements<\/b> \u2014 formatting, images, videos, etc. \u2014 in terms of font, arrangement, size, perspective, clarity, etc.<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Describe and evaluate the <b>text <\/b>\u2013 the actual words \u2014 in terms of language used for action (verbs, verbs, verbs), sequence (order of steps), manner (how something is done), and purpose (why something is done).<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>2. Looking closer at instructions as webtexts: Part II<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>On Thursday I also asked you\u00a0to try to make or do something from one of these sites \u00a0(or somewhere\u00a0similar), paying attention to\u00a0what worked well with the instructions and what did not. Tell us about how this went:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>How could these instructions be improved?<\/li>\n<li>What would happen if they were rewritten in a different medium?<\/li>\n<li>If there\u2019s a comment section, how did\u00a0folks add to the experience?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>3. Working with Teams.<\/strong> The reading for today (\u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.courses.jasonluther.net\/professional\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/BrownEtAl_ProjectPlanning-1.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">Project Planning and Tracking<\/a>\u201d) outlined some strategies for mapping a project with a team and checking in with it. Use <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/document\/d\/1geio5qpba4A7iqTJrKYc8WIKgrJm-W0IKz57i8zBAA4\/edit?usp=sharing\" target=\"_blank\">this Google Doc<\/a>\u00a0as you\u00a0meet with your group and apply the readings (be sure to save your own copy first!). Ultimately by the end of the class, I want the project manager from each\u00a0group to send me an\u00a0email briefing me on:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Your chosen host for your webtext and your reasons<\/li>\n<li>Your project plan, addressing scope, assumptions, requirements for success, tasks +\u00a0schedule, and the kinds of ways you&#8217;ll track your progress throughout the next few weeks<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;d like to start today by quickly reviewing what&#8217;s coming up, especially conferences on Thursday and Tech Briefings next week.
