  1. Hey Lexi, I interned for a finance company too this past summer, except I realized that a job in finance is not the career path for me. I hope that you enjoyed your internship and learned a lot!

Hi Tiang, I think it’s really cool that you have experience in so many different areas of retail as well as at different types of retail stores. I’m still trying to figure out what exactly I want to do in retail but I think I definitely want to be a buyer.

Hey Rachel, I think it’s awesome that you made your own Facebook Page. I just looked it up on Facebook, and I thought your posts were really funny, especially the one about the key lime pie in need of a job. You just got one more like to your Facebook Page!

    • Thanks, Anisha! Most of the stuff I post is from other websites (mostly Tumblr), but I actually took that picture, so it’s cool to hear you say you liked that one in particular.

Question for you: What is an extern? My mom and I shop at Ross — that’s awesome that you got to work there.

      • It was a two week program with Ross right after school ended and we got to go to corporate and shadow employees in the buying and planning division of the store!

    • Hi Anisha,

It’s great that you have the externing experience with Ross! There’s so much to do and learn about retail. I love it!

    • Hey Anisha! Which company did you intern with? I did enjoy it, it did take me a little while to realize it was not the right fit. I hope you enjoyed yours also!

      • I interned for State Street Bank. It’s actually a really big company, but no one has ever heard of it unless you’re in the finance industry. And that’s the greatest thing about internships, you learn what you do and don’t want to do.

  2. Even, that’s so interesting that you run your own sneaker business! I also run my own business using Etsy where i make and sell my own jewelry. Do you use any specific website to run yours?

Alina, I think it was awesome that you were interested in yoga! I am too. When did you start? Do you take any yoga classes at SU?

Julia, I saw that you were interested in fashion. I love fashion and would hope to incorporate that into my career some day as well. Just checked out the clothing company you worked for and looks like they have some cute stuff. You must have had a fun time interning this summer!

  3. Rachel, I’ve never heard of Grammer Police before but it sounds pretty awesome. I think I’ll have to submit my next paper to be looked over. Kelly, I am also aspiring to be a CPA. Quickbooks is definitely a lifesaver. Lexi, I always thought figure skating was so cool. I think there is a figure skating club at Cuse if you are not already in it.

    • Thanks, Alina! I’d be happy to look over your paper — I do actually enjoy proofreading. I’m glad you like the page!

I have a question that I often get as an IT student: Is finance/accounting a primarily male field? I know that my classes here seem pretty balanced gender-wise, but in my internship I was the only female on my team. I don’t think I know any female accountants…then again, I don’t think I know any male accountants, either.

  4. Hey Lucas,

I played baseball since I was really young too. Also, I made the all-county team during my high school as well but as a center fielder. Do you play on the Syracuse Club baseball team?

    • I don’t play for the club team. I wrecked my arm the summer after my senior year so I can’t pitch much anymore. I do play in an adult league over the summers. Do you still play?

  5. Hey Alina,

It was really nice of you to volunteer over 100 hours this summer at the Cystic Fibrosos Foundation. I also enjoy eating a lot of Greek food too. Are you Greek? (I have a friend from back home who has the same last name I was curious if you are related.)

    • I actually am Greek. Pappas is a common name in Greek mine is short for Pappadakus so chances are were probably not related and he has a different “Greek” last name haha.

  6. Hey Tim,

I am a Yankee fan too. I also went to a few games over the summer to see Jeter’s last season. When I was in high school I took a C++ class and I remember it being really hard so it’s pretty col that you know these different computer programming languages.

  7. Hello Andrew,

I am also a Chemical Engineer and from New York City. If you are a part of the e-board of ICHe in Syracuse or could give me more information on how to join that would be awesome! Well hopefully we can network sometime and share our knowledge on chemical engineering.

  8. Kathryn- I am thinking about going to Florence second semester also, it sounds amazing and I am sure you will love it!
Alina- Your schedule sounds very busy, as you are a part of many organizations on campus. I would love to hear more about the dance team!
Anisha- We both are Retail majors, so I would love to hear more about your future career plans!

  9. Hello Timothy,

I am also a die hard yankees fan! It is a shame for Derek Jeter, the captain, to leave the team but, I believe that the Yankees will continue to have what it takes to win championships. I also know a little coding from my Matlab class, it is awesome that you are good at java; I always had trouble with making codes.

    • Franciso- I also believe that the Yankees can continue to to win more championships without Jeter. Codes can be complicated sometimes as I will also have problems at times. It was also nice to know that there is another person’s hometown to be New York City.

Mark- it’s nice to know there are a few Yankee fans in the class and hopefully they can make it to the playoffs this season. It good to know another IT person as I also might try to somehow get a job in the IT department for the government

  10. Evan, I am also a Yankees fan and I also enjoy playing baseball. I thought it was interesting that you ran a sneaker business and are trying to implement what you’ve learned from the business to stocks.

  11. Timothy, I see that you follow Yankees Baseball, I also follow the Yankees. Looking forward to a great season.

Ethan, I see you are an OKC fan, I also follow the NBA. I, too, enjoy watching Durant and the OKC. What did you think about Durant pulling out of the USA team?

Rachel, I read in your bio that you are thinking about becoming an IT Contractor for the Army. From my experiences working with civilian IT contractors while in the military, you should look into companies like Harris, Raytheon, or even Lockheed Martin.

    • Good to know! My fiance actually worked for LM for a little while this summer and I think he applied for a job at Raytheon, but I’d never heard of Harris. Thanks for the info!

  12. Andrew,
Saw that you were reading the ASOIAF series. How do you like it so far and what book are you on? I just started Feast and love the series.
    Anisha,
Saw that you like the Lakers. How do you think the team will do with Kobe back? Do you think they will make the playoffs?

    Edel,
I was sad to see KD pull out of USA Basketball but I understand his reasons with the PG injury directly before his decision. I hope he is back for the 2016 Olympics.

  13. Alina, I read that you volunteered at the Cystic Fibrosos Foundation. That sounds really great. What kind of things did you do during your volunteering?

Evan, I saw in your bio that you’re a Yankees fan. I sure hope that’s not because they have won the most… We will have to talk baseball at some point

Andrew, since we are both Chemical Engineering, we have a ton of classes together as usual. What do you think about our classes so far?

    • Hi Lucas!

I don’t think they will be too bad this semester. Thermodynamics doesn’t seem very fun yet considering we have to start using Maxwell equations again, but besides that I’m enjoying classes so far.

  14. Andrew, I’m a big Game of Thrones fan but haven’t read the books. Have you been watching as you read? Or not watching at all? Rachel, have you heard of the hardcore band Cursive? They used to have a cello player (check out the video for “Some Red Handed Sleight of Hand”). It’s not what you’d typically expect from a cellist in a band. 🙂 Lucas, I’m sorry you took the Giants over the Bills, but that’s better than the Jets over the Bills. What do you think of the Sabres’ moves this offseason? To be honest, I haven’t really been keeping up with them (even though I’m a fan).

    • I liked that they signed Gionta. He will be a great leader for the young guys coming through. I didn’t like some of their moves. They signed a couple of solid players that might make them an ok team, and since they are rebuilding, I’d like for them to get the number one pick. I’ve heard good things about the kid that’ll get picked first overall in the next draft

    • I’ll check the band out! I haven’t heard of them, but there’s some very interesting cello stuff out there. If you’re into hardcore-ish music, look up Apocalyptica — they cover Metallica songs with three cellos and a drummer. It’s awesome.

    • Hello Jason!

I actually watched and finished all of season 4 before I started the books reading the books. A close friend of mine who has read every book so far insisted that I start the series, and although some minor events are different on paper I still find it to be an enjoyable counterpart to the show.

  15. Hello Kathryn,

Etsy is awesome! I have bought so many gifts for my friends. I hope business is good, your necklaces and headpieces look great!

  16. Hello Kathryn, I’m loving the Etsy website! I’m in love with the necklaces.

Hi Rachel, really cool that you want to become an IT contractors in the Army! And wish I was good at grammar!

Hi Alina, I love greek food! What’s your favorite spot?

  17. Hey Andrew,
I noticed that you are interested in doing research on alternative forms of energy to oil. What made you pursue this goal and what types of energy are you most interested in researching. For one of my business classes I researched the wind power industry, so I also think alternative energy is a pretty interesting subject.

  18. Jason,
What made you choose the University of Nevada, Reno for your MA in English? What was the best part about being in Reno?

    • David, I was teaching high school in WNY but was looking for universities that would be likely to grant me a TA-ship as an MA student (which is somewhat difficult in the humanities); UNR was the only school to give me one. Reno is an incredible town — very underrated. I think the best part was being 45 min away from incredible hiking, snowboarding, fishing, and camping. I also met many friends there with whom I still keep in touch.

  19. Evan,
I am also a finance major. How do you like the program so far? I am trying to pick finance electives for next semester. Have you taken any classes that you recommend I take or don’t take?

  20. Lexi,

That’s really cool that you competed nationally for skating! I always wanted to get into skating so I could play hockey, but I never got the hang of it. How long have you been skating?

    Dave,

I visited Cleveland this past summer and loved the atmosphere and culture the city had. Are you Browns fan? If so, what do you think about Johnny Manziel?

    Timothy,

As a fellow Yankee’s fan it sure is sad to see Jeter have to leave after this year. The fact that you got to see him play during his last season must’ve been an outstanding experience. I’m originally from the Bronx so I’m curious as to what borough you’re from.

  21. Lexi, I think yoga is so calming. I’ve recently gotten into it as well!

Ethan, it’s so cool that you’ve covered such huge events! That must be so exciting.

Anisha, I love that you included that you jam to Beyonce, but then again… I mean, who doesn’t?

  22. Hi Rachel,

I can’t believe you’re owner of The Grammar Police! I’ve actually been a fan of that page for quite some time. I’m interning for a small start up now and am in charge of their social media pages. I know it’s not exactly the same, but I was wondering what techniques you used to get your likes up and how long it took you to reach 125k. That’s pretty impressive!

    Hey Julia,

I’m hoping to get more involved in some of the Whitman clubs also. Which ones did you have in mind?

    Evan,

It’s so cool that you’re already running your own business! What types of sneakers do you sell? Or what other services do you provide? Here’s a link to a sneaker business a young man and his father started in my hometown that I thought was pretty cool: http://nypost.com/2014/06/15/harlem-entrepreneur-opens-pawn-shop-for-high-top-sneakers/

  23. Hi Lucas,

Your interests in chemical engineering and economics sounds very interesting! can you tell me a little more about how you decided on those two subject areas and your perspective on how they integrate with one another?

  24. Professor Luther,
Thanks for using the word “sojourn”, I looked it up and it’s a vocabulary word I’ll remember! I took a sojourn to Jackson Hole Wyoming last summer! I’m glad to hear your impressive career history as well! I’d love to hear more about what composition rhetoric describes.

Hey Anisha, in terms of your knowledge and opinion from your experience in your major- what do you think of the individual being able to order single articles of clothing at a wholesale price directly from china, from websites such as aliexpress? I also wonder what you think about all of the mini retailers able to thrive because of instagram and using popular instagram users as advertising?

    Timothy Wong,

I am also interested in databases, I think it’s incredible how much data is collected and how little is often put into terms to be understood and to develop theories through data analysis. I want to get into some data visualization programming this semester, have you ever done anything like that?
